We all have seen this image of Dan Chung from DSLR News Shooter. This is a priceless screen capture with the new Canon EOS-1D C. Give us something funny about Dan’s reaction towards the price-tag of this new camera.

Cannon has recently filed a new patent titled “Recording successive frames of raw sensor data depicting a moving scene”. The process will allow faster recording of 4K high-resolution frames at about the speed of 2K resolution. Essentially, the method captures a high-resolution frame followed by a low resolution frame. Because successive frames are very similar the lower resolution frame can be restored later to full resolution. During the video recording there is less raw data for the camera to process and store. Thus the higher resolution videos take less space and time to store in the camera. When transferred to a computer the frames are algorithmically rendered at the higher resolution.

A $20,000 camera does not truly show your craftsmanship. What it really takes to make a movie is balls, commitment, support, and knowledge. The new Scarlet and Canon C-300 does not destroy our chances of showing our work as a filmmaker. But it could be another tool to obtain what we really want to capture as a director. We have DSLR’s, RED, Arri, and hell we have an Iphone that can shoot HD video. We have to stop with this gear obsession.

Hollyweird, got a new camera that has taken over the Twitter-verse and all the filmmakers wants it. Big Deal! But do they really need it? YES! $20,000 camera is relatively cheap for them. But is it budget friendly for independent filmmakers? Filmmakers would love to have their hands on the Scarlet and The C-300. But Is it really necessary or important to go crazy with these cameras? No.

We do need a 4K camera that can be used in places that are difficult to shoot at. Like subway trains, ferries, and any other places that you can think of. However, not only that this wonderful device is compact but it has professional features that DSLR’s lack of; ND filters inside the body, 4K capability, SDI and double CF cards compartment for no data loss. All of these sound amazing! But can our computer even play 4K footage… (wait these cameras does not use 4K for the final result which is 1080p) probably not but it’s safe to play 1080p footage to cut in any video editing software.
This an example from prolost.com (you got to read this post!) that shows the different sizes from HDSLR to the Super 35 Film sensor. It gives you a good idea what we’re talking about as for image capture and crop factor.
The Scarlet X has a larger sensor than the Canon C300, but you won’t be using it all to make movies. You can only achieve 24 fps at 4K and below—where the window you’re shooting to is actually smaller than the C300’s near exact match to the Super 35 frame width.

Keep on shooting more videos with your DSLR! Or whatever you have in your disposal. Show all these bloggers that are writing about getting these beast equipment like the Scarlet and the C-300, is not what camera you shoot a film that matters. What really matters is content. Always remember that. These are my final words for this subject: Cameras are tools… don’t be a tool because you want to buy an expensive equipment and don’t try to justify the need of buying an equipment like that. Be smart and focus on content.
This is an interesting interview of Matthew Libatique the Director of Photography from the new film Black Swan. I had no idea they used some HDLSRs for a couple of scenes. Especially in a very tight spot (location) literally.
We used a Canon 7D or 1D Mark IV for all the subway scenes; I could just carry a 7D and shoot on the subway all day with a very small crew. I did some tests with my wife beforehand to figure out my ASA, my stop, and how I was going to deal with the focus. I didn’t use any rigs with it because I wasn’t trying to shoot in the traditional way.

Here is an interesting charts on how different digital sensor works. Here you can see clearly how the Phantom, Arri, Sony, Red, Panasonic, and Canon cameras capture through their sensor.
It’s pretty interesting if you ask me.

This is my quick glimpse how awesome the 7d looks through the lens. I will be making ta review of it soon. As soon as I start pounding that camera, just kidding I can’t do that. I know it’s just a short and probably people will see and say…well it’s just a face. But I do like the quality on how it came out.
