Rocking like Daniel Peters! The Vimeo Interview.

Daniel Peters, is a fellow freelance filmmaker based in the U.K. He might look like a rockstar, and in part you’d be right.  Daniel creates music videos like a rock legend and has over 20 music videos under his belt. Also, he has shot and edited documentaries and wedding videos.  We are going to explore his methods of pre-production, production, his influences, and his inspirations as a filmmaker.
How did Daniel catch our eyes at AWSY? He shot directed and edited an experimental video called Bertie & Princess. The video beautifully showcases the work of a stable and the majestic nature of horse riding. He caught our eyes again with his latest work with the band Hello Lazarus- X marks. There’s no way to describe this music video. Therefore, we are posting it here! We hope that you’ll enjoy it as we did.

Mr. Peters, has accepted to be interviewed by the AWSY team on Vimeo. #AREWESHOOTINGYET Vimeo INTERVIEW:

We interviewed Daniel Peters through Vimeo.

Hello, Daniel!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to talk to you and accepting the interview.

Q: How did you find your next project? A: I’ve got to the point where clients contact me regarding music videos/weddings etc.
Anything different that I want to endeavor in, I contact companies discussing ideas, projects.

Q: Tell us how is your average day of pre-production? A: My usual Pre-production depends on the project. First thing is usually typical-location hunting, but for many bands this is tricky as most bands can’t afford location fees which makes my job a lot harder…as i think location is key when it comes to any project. Then if anything in the treatment requires any effects, I usually test that out first with stand ins, etc., to make sure it works smoothly…so that way i don’t shoot myself in the foot on delivery time.

Q: How do you meet such talented bands and what is your work ethic with them or any other client? A: Sometimes through my brothers recording studio (Anemic Studios) or from bands spreading the word on my work. My work ethic is usually the same with everyone…until I hear the song, i can vision the location, story, feel etc. Then I discuss my vision and the band usually likes it, few changes might happen here and there, due to time, location, actors or just simple story changes. But if i don’t feel for the song, I won’t do the project. It will just hurt me more than if I shot it for the money…if my heart isn’t in it I won’t do it. Been there and done that and…well it simply didn’t come out good.

Q: How do you fight with writer’s block? Because my writer’s block is kicking my ass for months now. A: Writer’s block is a bitch. I’m a big tv/drama fan so most of my inspiration comes from that and great photography…rather than other music video pieces.

Q: How do you manage to make your digital footage look and feel organic? Especially with your latest work with Hello Lazarus. A: I’m glad you said that. There are so many people shooting now that everything looks the same so, I always try my best to make my work … well look like my work. To be honest, anyone can shoot music videos, but I want to have a certain style with mine. For the Hello Lazarus one, they actually didn’t like the idea at first, so I had to do a lot of convincing which makes that project even more satisfying for how it came out. Im a big fan of film, the look of shows like, true blood, american horror story… so I try my best to copy that look with whatever I’m shooting on, which is usually cheap digital cameras haha. Funny enough, nearly that whole video was shot with a cheap Sony Nex5n.

Q: As a musician yourself do you feel like you have an advantage in the editing room?A: Def not….but my way of editing i do just as they way i shoot. If I’m not feeling the song, I won’t edit it…so I usually edit the video straight away as I am completely in that vibe/zone of that style. I hope a lot of my edits look different too and editing is def another form of art. A great cinematographer can shoot something amazing and beautiful but an editor…can fuck that up in seconds, Ha!

Q: Which is your favorite gear so far? A: Def the Red Scarlet but i wouldn’t be able to appreciate it if I didn’t start off shooting the way I did. I started with a Panasonic HVX 200 with a shoot35 adapter, then moved over to the Canon 5DMKII and here I am now with the scarlet…

Q: Tell us about your production workflow?A: My production workflow with bands tend to be a little similar I usually start off shooting the wides, as this warms up the band and they tend to not feel too awkward as I’m not right in their face yet with the camera.

Q: What would be your dream-gear? A: I think my only dream gear would be the phantom camera… other than that, i’d much rather have great actors and access to amazing locations.

Q: Do you have a new project in mind or in pre-production do you want to share with us? A: I’ve been writing and trying to start shooting my web series that would air an 1hr episode every 2 weeks, but getting the budget for actors/locations has been really tricky. Thats all I can share on that, Ha!

Q: Was there ever a project that turned into a nightmare? What did you do to keep from happening again?
Ha definitely… a band changed their mind on the location and said were nearly here now and we’ll just shoot it at your studio. I said no, they showed up anyways…discussed a few things, pretty had to set up and shoot a music video in 2-3 hours… no names mentioned, sorry, Ha!

Re-writes made by Fans (The Future of Storytelling has Arrived)

From games to feature films are going through major re-writes. Fans around the globe are demanding a new ending to this year “Blockbuster” game Mass Effect 3. Also, they are stunned by Michael Bay’s presentation about his next cinematic endeavor Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PST… there are not mutants anymore… they are aliens). Is this a new wave that can affect filmmaking, gaming, comics, and other popular media?

This is a very insightful article about how much fans can and cannot affect your piece, in both good and bad ways.  Should you listen to your audience (if you have a popular property in your hands)

– I actually contend that commercial storytelling across all media should increasingly incorporate community feedback as an essential element in a project’s success. Fan influence might alter a project by 5% or 60%. It’s all in the balance of how fan feedback is utilized in the process.

The End of Film is Nigh? Kodak File for Chapter 11!

Daily Disney

Filmmakers and Photographer were shaken but not surprised by the news of Kodak filing for bankruptcy. This company have evolved photography and cinema in unison over a century. Now the Kodak Eastman co. filed for chapter 11 protection after 132 years of business. Kodak is suffering one of the most common mistakes that other companies have done… not to adapt in the digital market. The surprising factor is that Kodak have survived this long without the consumer market. However, this company’s future might not look as bright as they were in the 20th century this company was trusted with most of our precious possession… memories.  Is this the end of film? Is this going to be the end of Kodak Film Roll era?

Letter To You (STOP SOPA and PIPA)

I am a fellow Blogger, that writes this post hoping to get your attention. I urge you as my reader to really look what SOPA and PIPA can do to you! If PIPA and SOPA act passes this will be the start of a very agressive censorship to any type of artistic expression. I speak of myself that I am an Aspiring Filmmaker, who hopes that one day with the help of the Internet I can fulfill my dream job as a working media creator or filmmaker.

If we start censoring artistic expressions through out the Internet this gives power to those giant corporations to shape up this country and take control of our freedom.

If this bill passes… people’s artistic expression will be taken away. Because of big corporations that are failing to innovate and move forward to bring what the audience wants.  Just imagine a future where cinema and television can not compete with creative people or discover creative people on the Internet. This Act will strip future writers from writing an original piece — which piece is original and have the potential to change the world.

And again I urge you to  Stop PIPA and the Sopa act by signing a petition to your elected official. Don’t be afraid to give ‘em your opinion.

Sincerely.
Victor Gregory
P.S. AWSY.net will be dark tomorrow too! Protesting this outrageous acts.

The Director’s Journal: Working with Actors pt.1

There’s nothing more important in any production than knowing how to work with your actors.  As a director its your responsibility to give actors the right words or the right situation to help them get into character for the scene. Freedom is a very important aspect, by giving them enough liberty your actors may come up with something that your character might do or say. Keep in mind that actors are more than willing to give you their best on camera performance. Directors should be a spiritual guide to these actors (sortof); you will give them rituals (rehearsals), and a purpose to the character’s life and choices.  As soon as you capture the right performance, that magical moment when your actors deliver their lines, all the effort will be worthwhile. By failing to do so you might be stuck in that scene for long time. That is, unless you are directing like Stanley Kubrick who almost killed Shelley Duvall at the set of The Shinning (Read more). One thing I can promise you— things will get kind of bumpy when working with your cast. There’s no right or wrong. Here are some tips that will make your job in understanding your actor’s struggles and needs a little bit easier.

Also, you will get the first sneak peek of the Haunt Hunter (NSFW) !!  Ain’t that SWEET!

New Update on 5D to RGB!! GH1- GH2 Friendly!

Rarevision have released a new update to the 5DtoRGB. This new update is GH1 and GH2 friendly. No more conversions without audio! You can turn your AVCHD into ProRes 444 for a more flatter and Mac friendly format. 5DtoRGB will help you get more latitude in your footage for color grading, or create smaller versions of takes for dailies after the shoot before any editing or any syncing takes place.

Also, they have added their 5DtoRGB to the Mac App Store. The only downside is the price tag. $50 is not bad for what you are getting though, and with the paid version you get a couple more features like: batch selection, add noise, among other features.

This is good news for those using DSLR’s that use the AVCHD video format. Rejoice Panasonic users now is our time!

Go grab the free version or buy it at Mac App Store.

The Panasonic Lumix-GH2 can now shoot video with higher ISO!

This video was made by Andrew Reid from EOSHD.com  he shot this entirely at **ISO 12,800** on the GH2 with Vitaliy’s latest hack. P-Tool Version 3.63.

No noise reduction on camera or in post. Not graded. This was shot with Dynamic B&W (black and white color) in-camera.

Great small piece with a lot of usable footage. Surprising factor! Especially, the 4/3 sensor breaks your image as soon as it gets dark. However, using high ISO might fix the issue with its sensor.

What is your verdict? Leave us a comment on what do you think of this new hack? Oh, don’t forget to add us in your Google+ circle for more fun and updates.

This Scarlet and C-300 Obsession Got to Stop! (Updated)

A $20,000 camera does not truly show your craftsmanship. What it really takes to make a movie is balls, commitment, support, and knowledge. The new Scarlet and Canon C-300 does not destroy our chances of showing our work as a filmmaker. But it could be another tool to obtain what we really want to capture as a director. We have DSLR’s, RED, Arri, and hell we have an Iphone that can shoot HD video. We have to stop with this gear obsession.

Hollyweird, got a new camera that has taken over the Twitter-verse and all the filmmakers wants it. Big Deal! But do they really need it? YES! $20,000 camera is relatively cheap for them. But is it budget friendly for independent filmmakers? Filmmakers would love to have their hands on the Scarlet and The C-300. But Is it really necessary or important to go crazy with these cameras? No.

We do need a 4K camera that can be used in places that are difficult to shoot at. Like subway trains, ferries, and any other places that you can think of. However, not only that this wonderful device is compact but it has professional features that DSLR’s lack of; ND filters inside the body, 4K capability, SDI and double CF cards compartment for no data loss. All of these sound amazing! But can our computer even play 4K footage… (wait these cameras does not use 4K for the final result which is 1080p) probably not but it’s safe to play 1080p footage to cut in any video editing software.

This an example from prolost.com (you got to read this post!) that shows the different sizes from HDSLR to the Super 35 Film sensor. It gives you a good idea what we’re talking about as for image capture and crop factor.

The Scarlet X has a larger sensor than the Canon C300, but you won’t be using it all to make movies. You can only achieve 24 fps at 4K and below—where the window you’re shooting to is actually smaller than the C300’s near exact match to the Super 35 frame width.

- Stu Maschwitz

Keep on shooting more videos with your DSLR! Or whatever you have in your disposal. Show all these bloggers that are writing about getting these beast equipment like the Scarlet and the C-300, is not what camera you shoot a film that matters. What really matters is content. Always remember that. These are my final words for this subject: Cameras are tools… don’t be a tool because you want to buy an expensive equipment and don’t try to justify the need of buying an equipment like that. Be smart and focus on content.

And The Haunting Begins….

IT BEGINS…
